Bricolage. Appunt'attenti di un'acuta osservatrice

Alessia Armeni, Sue Kennington, Marta Mancini e Andrea Panarelli propongono presso Yellow una mostra che vuole identificare un processo creativo nel quale il pittore individuale proprie intenzioni durante l’azione pittorica.
Il concetto di “scivolare” allude a quella direzione inaspettata prodotta dall’azione combinata di più forze; si vuole intendere una pratica che a partire da un progetto iniziale, si lascia contaminare dalle possibilità che la pittura stimola
nel suo divenire; durante questo processo può essere tradito il programma iniziale e sposato l’imprevisto.

L’obiettivo non sarà, a questo punto, rappresentare sul quadro un’immagine prefissata ma descrivere il tramutarsi di questa in linguaggio pittorico. Dunque, in Alessia Armeni l’identità del segno pittorico è incerta tra rappresentare un soggetto ed essere soggetto esso stesso; in Sue Kennington strutture di impianto geometrico si aprono in subordine alle volontà cromatiche; Marta Mancini attraverso stratificazioni di gesti fluidi fonde ed intesse trame a tracciati di colore; per Andrea Panarelli la ripetizione di un soggetto cede alla sua disintegrazione per rinascere in altro.
Sono lavori che mettono in discussione il concetto di determinazione di un’opera, il cui lavoro e tempo di realizzazione, come ogni esperienza, sono parte di un tutto; ogni opera è necessaria per la successiva, tassello di un corpo di lavori e contemporaneamente affermazione assoluta.

Yellow is pleased to present Scivolare Lentamente (literally “To Slide Slowly”), an exhibition curated by Alessia Armeni, that looks at ways in which the artist discovers his or her intentions through the process itself.

The idea of slipping alludes to the unexpected direction that occurs when aspects of the process effect the outcome. That is setting out from an initial projected idea, the direction changes in response to various possibilities encountered in its ‘becoming’, often thus abandoning the original concept, and embracing the unexpected. The aim being not to adhere to a pre-fixed idea, but to present rather the slippage that occurs during the working process, as the finished work.

In the work of Armeni, we are unsure whether the mark is representing a subject or has in fact become the subject itself. In Kennington’s paintings, the implied geometries give way during her process, to the intensities of the chromatic juxtapositions. Mancini uses layers of fluid gestures and interlaced threads of colour to achieve this slippage. Panarelli through repetition of his subject, enables the subject to give way and transform.

All of these paintings question the concept of “definition of an artwork”. The labour and the time spent for their making contribute to a whole, just like an experience. Every single painting is essential to the next one; it is a piece of the puzzle and yet an absolute statement.

Alessia Armeni (1975) lives and works in Rome. She received a diploma in painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milano in 1999. Sue Kennington (1955 London) received her MFA at Goldsmith College London in 2002 and her BA Painting from Chelsea College, London in 1994. In 1996 her work was featured in New Contemporaries at the Tate Liverpool and at the Camden Arts Centre, London. Since then she has shown regularly in both Italy, UK and abroad. Recent shows include: Sue Kennington at Magazzini dell’Arte Contemporanea, Sicily; Frame Structure con Adelita Husni Bey at Galleria La Veronica, Modica, Sicily; Contemporary British Painting at Container Gallery, London and Eye and Mind at the Mercus Barn in France. She recently completed a Visiting Artist Residency at the American Academy in Rome. She currently curates a project space in the heart of the Crete Senesi – Hickster Projects. She lives and works between there and a studio in Rome.

Marta Mancini (1981 Roma) lives and works in Rome. Received her Diploma in 2006 from the Accademia di Belle Arti, Roma, selected solo and group shows: Abita curated by Pericle Guaglianone, Gallery S.A.L.E.S, Rome, 2012; Dodici stanze, curated by Claudio Libero Pisano, CIAC Castello Colonna, Genazzano, 2015; Premio Limen Arte 2014, Palazzo Comunale E. Andrea Panarelli (Zurigo 1975) attended the Florence Academy of Art in 2007. In 2015 opened V.AR.CO., exhibition space in l’Aquila. Yellow è uno spazio e un progetto d’arte contemporanea indipendente e no profit, diretto dall’artista Vera Portatadino. Ha sede a Varese, nell’ambito di Zentrum ed è nuovo scenario per la pittura contemporanea internazionale.

Yellow is an artist-run space founded in 2014 and directed by artist Vera Portatadino. It is based in Varese and it is part of Zentrum, a contemporary platform for the arts. Yellow is a new scenario for national and international painting.
